If good things do come in small packages, we are in for a rare treat beginning January 31. Opening that day at the Birmingham Museum of Art is Small Treasures: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals, and Their Contemporaries. This will be the first exhibition to explore the little-known field of small-format 17th century paintings from the Dutch and Flemish Golden Age. During that era, the technical and precise skills of artists were highly revered, creating a demand for small-scale portraits. The exhibition runs through April 26. www.artsbma.org
