The World Games, 2021, Birmingham, AL
Birmingham Crossplex

In 2013, Birmingham invited the world to the 50th anniversary of Civil Rights activities here. This year, we issued another invitation to host the 2021 World Games, and the world accepted. As many as 4,000 athletes from more than 100 countries are expected in Birmingham for the multi-sport event featuring non-Olympic sports such as softball, lacrosse, gymnastics, karate and water skiing—more than 40 sports in all. The 11-day event, pursued by Alabama Sports Hall of Fame officials, could reach an economic impact of $250 million. This will be the first time the U.S. has played host to the World Games since the inaugural event in 1981 in Santa Clara, CA. www.theworldgames.org
