The smoked meat that rules so many restaurants in the Birmingham area is finally having its place in the sun. The Alabama Tourism Department recently announced that 2015 is the “Year of Alabama Barbecue.” That announcement and the publicity it brings is expected to attract even more culinary tourists to plot their travels to sample the ‘cue. In tandem with the announcement was the unveiling of a new website devoted to the history of the popular dish. “Pork Ribs and Politics: The Origin of Alabama Barbecue” follows the history of barbecue culture from its arrival in the new world to its prominent place in Alabama life.
