carlos_izcaraywebInternationally acclaimed conductor Carlos Izcaray has been appointed Music Director of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. The Venezuelan-born conductor, currently based in Berlin, will assume his position in Birmingham in September. Born in Caracas into a family of artistic generations, Izcaray was enrolled in Venezuela’s renowned public system of youth orchestras at three years old, when most of us were still eating dirt. Conducting with his father since he was a teenager, he went on to become a distinguished fellow at the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen. Izcaray is an alumnus of the Interlochen Arts Academy, New World School of the Arts and Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. For three years, he was conductor of the Mozarteum-Caracas Chamber Orchestra. The Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s 160 performances a year include the Masterworks Series, the Super Pops Series, and the Explorer and Young People’s Concert Series. www.alabamasymphony.org
