In 1910, the building of Rickwood Field put Birmingham on the national baseball map. In his new book, 101 Baseball Places to See before You Strike Out, author Josh Pahigian ranks Rickwood as one of the top overall destinations. The author told the Birmingham Business Journal he wrote the book to highlight places of most interest to fans, determined by a venue’s history, place in pop culture and architecture. Rickwood, he said, falls into all these categories. Through its history, Rickwood has been home to the Birmingham Barons and the Birmingham Black Barons. It also has been the movie set for films such as the Jackie Robinson biopic “42.” As far as its architecture goes, Pahigian says it was innovative in its use of steel and concrete design, a departure from the traditional wooden structure. www.rickwood.com
