Soccer is back in the air with Birmingham on the 2015 FIFA Women’s Cup Champions 10-city victory tour. The Americans will play a “friendly match” against the Australian women’s national soccer team at Legion Field on September 20. The United States Women’s National Soccer Team is now ranked #1 in the world after a 5-2 victory over the Japanese team in the 2015 World Cup. Tickets go on sale July 31at US Soccer and include a range of options and packages. The Alabama Sports Foundation was instrumental in securing the game for Birmingham. Officials there said they expect to sell in excess of 35,000 tickets. The U.S./Australia soccer game joins a long lineup of Birmingham’s attracting major sporting events. Soccer mania began in Birmingham more than two decades ago when the city hosted Team USA and Argentina in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics.
