“Photography is more than a job for me, it is who I am. I love making great, and sometimes fun, images.” - Butch Oglesby Butch Oglesby has seemingly always had a camera in his hands. As a child growing up in south Alabama, his mother let him use the family's Brownie Hawkeye camera to make photos of his friends, family, nature, and sometimes even toys. Thankfully, this passion was something he never outgrew. Today, after living in several states and spending nearly a decade in Europe, he owns BlueMoon Studios in Bluff Park. Join us on the 12th to hear Butch speak directly about his exhibit at Aldridge Gardens. [less-]

The art exhibit, Textures of Jazz: Threads of Change by Leanna Leithauser-Lesley, will be on display in the Central Library's Fourth Floor Gallery from February 6 through March 31, 2018. Textures of Jazz, Threads of Change is a 21-piece jazz portrait exhibition by Birmingham artist Leanna Leithauser-Lesleyin honor of Black History Month. Her collection of jazz needlepoint portraits are accompanied by bios explaining the role each musician played in jazz history, American history, and civil rights history. The exhibit will feature two workshops by the artist on February 14 and 15 between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., with live music in Central Library’s Atrium. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 15, noon to 2:00 p.m., in the Fourth Floor Gallery. There will be music and light refreshments. Leithauser-Lesley received a BA in art education from Auburn University. Though she has done art in many mediums throughout her career, her passion as an avid needle pointer and music lover led her to put together the Textures of Jazz exhibit. Her exhibit has appeared across the Southeast, including Atlanta and at the Hoover Public Library in 2017. [less-]

One of the most prolific and acclaimed photographers of his generation, David Levinthal uses toys and miniature figures to restage significant moments or cultural milestones throughout history. Considered one of the earliest postmodern photographers, Levinthal uses these images to question the role of photography as a reliable presentation of historical fact, while also exploring the ways in which toys can influence socialization. The majority of works from David Levinthal: Playland come from an anonymous gift, consisting of 59 large-format Polaroids, to the AEIVA Permanent Art Collection. The donation includes images from several series by the artist spanning multiple decades, including BarbieAmerican BeautiesBlackfaceWild WestMein Kampf, and Passion. [less-]

[less-]
