Ireland-based Bill Shipsey is a human rights activist, artist event promoter and producer, barrister, and the founder of Art for Amnesty—Amnesty International’s global artist engagement program. Since 2012 he has conceived and commissioned 12 monumental memorial tapestries (funded in the main by artist supporters of Amnesty International, including Bono and The Edge of U2, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Yoko Ono, Paul Simon and John Legend) honoring, among others, Vaclav Havel, Seamus Heaney, Nelson Mandela, John Lennon and the people of Colombia. These tapestries are on permanent loan at various airport and museum locations around the world. Most of the tapestries were designed by New-York-based Czech artist Peter Sis and woven by master weavers at Ateliers Pinton in Felletin-Aubusson, France. Three new Peter Sis–designed tapestries honoring Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. are on display at the Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham. [less-]

An exhibit from the collections of the Birmingham Public Library Archives will be on display at the Central Library’s Fourth Floor Gallery. Alabama Illustrated: Engravings from 19th Century Newspapers features images of Alabama people, places, and events that appeared in national and international newspapers from the 1850s to the 1890s.

Prior to the 1890s, the technology did not exist to reproduce photographs in newspapers inexpensively. To provide illustrations for their readers, national and international papers like Harper's WeeklyFrank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, and the Illustrated London News sent artists around the world to draw pictures that were then engraved onto copper plates and printed in the newspapers. Many of these artists visited Alabama, and this exhibition features 28 examples of their work. BPL Archivist Jim Baggett will offer a free gallery tour on Sunday, December 10, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. Reservations are not required. [less-]

If you like looking at historic photographs, make plans to make your way to the Birmingham Public Library (BPL)’s Central branch to view its new exhibit Shot in Alabama: Historical Birmingham Photographs. The exhibit is open to the public through February 4, 2018, in the First Floor Gallery. The photo display features nearly 30 pictures from the book Shot in Alabama: A History of Photography, 1839-1941, and a List of Photographers by author Frances Osborn Robb, released by the University of Alabama Press in 2016. Shot in Alabama is Robb's visual and textual narrative of Alabama's photographic history from 1839 to 1941. BPL’s exhibit highlights the Birmingham photographs, many of which come from BPL’s Archives Department. Students from Altamont School in Birmingham designed the exhibit and wrote the content for the 30 photograph labels. Robb, author and curator of the exhibit, will give a lecture about Shot in Alabama the book in the Central Library’s Fiction Department at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2018. Robb will also lead a gallery tour of the exhibit at 2:30 p.m. prior to her talk. Presented chronologically, Robb depicts Civil War photography, portraits of the end of the 19th century, the Great Depression, pre-World War II illustrated photography, and more. Robb also chronicles the work of hundreds of photographers—black and white, amateur and professional, women and men. The Shot in Alabama book also has an appendix listing 1,400 photographers by name, working dates, and location. A Birmingham native, Robb has spent 25 years researching Alabama photography while serving as a consultant on the state's cultural history and historic photography for museums, archives, and libraries. Plaza Art Gallery / Jan 1 – Jan 31, 2017
The Gee’s Bend community is located on a peninsula of land formed by a bend in the Alabama River. This historically and culturally significant landscape holds deep within its roots Alabama’s greatest quilting tradition, recognized nationally and internationally for the innovative use of geometric shapes, the formation of complex patterns and the combination of diverse colors and textures. Once owned by the planter class, the original slave population made quilts as a necessity to stay warm. Over time and through many periods of hardships and oppression, their descendants carried on the tradition. Today, several generations of people from Gee’s Bend continue making quilts that are now recognized as spectacular works of art. This exhibition was made possible by the Alabama Folklife Association.
