Dedicated to keeping the history and lessons of the Holocaust alive so that new generations will understand and embrace the underlying concepts of tolerance, humanity, and personal responsibility, the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center (BHEC) features a variety of exhibits and resources. On permanent display is the acclaimed Darkness into Life exhibit of photography, art, and narratives telling the stories of 20 Holocaust survivors who settled in Alabama. Also on display are a poster series about Rescuers and other artwork with Holocaust themes. Rotating displays of art created by students express the responses of young people to the painful history of what happened to the Jews and other groups during the Holocaust. The BHEC also offers the largest Holocaust Studies Library in the southeast, with more than 2,100 volumes available for loan or onsite study.
