Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day,” is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. This year marks its 159th year since first being celebrated in Galveston, Texas in 1865, and the third anniversary of Juneteenth being designated as a federal holiday on June 19 annually. Juneteenth marks a date of major significance in American history and shows us that freedom and racial equality have always been hard-fought battles for Black Americans.

The cultural celebration will feature activities for all ages. Festival goers can connect with culture through workshops and exhibits and enjoy local talent and crowd favorites on the main stage. BCRI’s permanent galleries will also be free throughout the day.
